BUT THERE ARE THREE WEEKS T GO AND POLITICS HAS TOLD US THAT ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN. WHAT WE FIND HERE IS THAT FOLKS WHO ARE UNDECIDED, WHO SELECTED AN ALTERNATIVE CANDIDATE IN FEBRUARY, THE MAJORITY OF THESE FOLKS IN AUGUST MOVED TOWARDS SENATOR MARKEY AND AWAY FROM REPRESENTATIVE KENNEDY. U.S. Democratic Senate candidate and current U.S. Representative Joe Kennedy III, who ran for the seat held by U.S. Massachusetts Senate - Democratic Primary. After the Massachusetts Senate race, it will be even tougher for Democrats to tamp down primary challenges from the left.
A new Massachusetts U.S. Senate Democratic Primary poll found incumbent Sen. Ed Markey gaining momentum over challenger Rep. Joseph Kennedy III. Fifty-one percent of the respondents said Markey, while 36% chose Kennedy and 13% responded, “Don’t Know” or “Other.”The poll of 362 Democrats and Independents was conducted online from July 31 to Aug. 7. The level of defection is about 11%.”The poll asked which candidate was trusted more to handle big issues.Markey was the choice for economy (48%), health care (47%), taxes (41%), education (43%), climate change (43%), President Trump (39%), transportation (41%), and the COVID-19 crisis (45%).Respondents chose Kennedy for one issue, race relations (39%).“And this is reflected in large part in one of his pillars of his campaign, which is speaking about issues of racial justice and racial equality and equity,” Nteta said about Kennedy.The poll also asked which candidate would do a better job of representing certain groups as Senator.Respondents chose Kennedy for women (38%), racial minorities (37%), young people (56%) and Catholics (51%).Markey was the choice for the middle class (50%), working class (46%), labor unions (49%), small business owners (44%), Progressives (40%), veterans (50%) and Western Massachusetts (38%).Respondents said the most important quality when deciding which candidate to vote for was the candidate who best represents my views on the issues (27%). HE SAID THE DIFFERENCE FROM A SIMILAR POLL IN FEBRUARY CAN BE FOUND WITH PEOPLE WHO WERE UNDECIDED. "What we find here is that folks who are undecided, who selected an alternative candidate in February, the majority of these folks in August moved towards Sen. Markey and away from Rep. Kennedy.
But Markey’s victory in the Massachusetts Senate primary marks what is perhaps the biggest win for progressives this year. There is a statewide race for U.S. Senate this year, with Democratic incumbent Ed Markey running for reelection.
