"I am a French princess. Everyone can see that she "has to be free" so they want to help her?) I liked Bess of Hardwick, I was intrigued by Mary, but George annoyed me. I have been long fascinated by the life and reign of Mary Queen Of Scots. Somebody, enlighten me, please. Gregory tells the story of when Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in Elizabethan England in the mid-1500s. Each book has a standalone quality and is sufficiently detailed that you don't have to have read the other books to understand what is happening. September 16th 2008 I have read Philippa Gregory's other books, and though they are not always factually correct, and most often read like gossip mags, I have come to enjoy them and expect that of her books. The story is told from three points of view: Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots; Elizabeth Talbot, Countess of Shrewsbury, also known as Bess of Hardwick; and George Talbot, the 6th Earl of Shrewsbury. The sample sounds like I will loathe it. I GET IT, okay?)

and did a lot of telling not showing (Mary is beautiful, therefore everyone loves her and wants to serve her? "Gregory is so very good at what she does....A book that warrants a comfortable chair, a cup of tea and an afternoon off from life. I liked Bess of Hardwick, I was intrigued by Mary, but George annoyed me. If you’ve seen the 2018 movie What I love about Philippa Gregory's novels is that you fall in love with the main character, even if you hated them as a periphery character in a previous book; and you also find yourself hating periphery characters that were main characters in another novel and you feel like your world is all upside-down and you love it all the more for that. The voices are strong throughout""Mary's hell-bent assuredness combines deliciously with brisk chapters and rich historical detail.

The charms of Mary Queen of Scots even got to me, the reader""Gregory's novel looks at Mary Stuart and her times from a fresh and engaging angle....One of the most admirable things....is the delicate way in which Gregory drops bits of historical allusion into a very personal story....Above all, the book is an examination of the nature of loyalty""Gregory's eye for detail and pacy storytelling bring to life a woman born to greatness but condemned to end her days on the scaffold"RT Book Reviews (Top Pick; 2008 Historical Biography Nominee)"Gregory is a grand mistress of the craft, following in the footsteps of Jean Plaidy, Anya Seton and James Michener.

To their horror, they find that the task will bankrupt them, and as their home becomes the epicenter of intrigue and rebellion against Elizabeth, their loyalty to each other and to their sovereign comes into question. It is written from the viewpoint of Mary Queen of Scots and her two jailers, but you are never engaged with any of the three main characters. I should have known how it was going to end. The Other Queen presents a darker Elizabeth than has currently been popularized in movies such as Elizabeth (1998) and Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). Two women competing for a man’s heart. "Order of Darkness: Dark Tracks" (2018) and Order of Darkness (Volumes 1-3), (2017)"Order of Darkness: Dark Tracks" (2018) and Order of Darkness (Volumes 1-3), (2017) Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. ""Shrewsbury’s refusal to recognize superior intelligence and force of will in his wife, who runs the estate, and in Mary, who tries to make him her instrument at every turn, makes for one delicious conflict after another. I understand that it was the most popular and was made into a film. Furthermore, I will bet a million dollars that 80% of the other readers NEVER read The Other Boleyn Girl and only saw the film which I cannot fathom why every reader must compare every book of Gregory's to The Other Boleyn Girl. In this book I find myself hating Queen Elizabeth once again because of my complete sympathy with the main character of Mary, Queen of Scots. As soon as I realized that this book was Tudor-Lite, I speed-read it just to be done with it. I have read Philippa Gregory's other books, and though they are not always factually correct, and most often read like gossip mags, I have come to enjoy them and expect that of her books. She has to learn to curb her tongue, to suppress her desires, to moderate her thoughts and to spend her days putting another first. I can pick up The Other Boleyn Girl and read through it in one sitting, but each book in the Tudor series grows more and more tired until we are left with the mess that is The Other Queen. George in my mind as I picture him is a young handsome man, faithful, yet sweet and innocent how he craves to haveThis novel deals with Mary Queen of Scots' early captivity in England whilst under the ';care' of Gilbert Talbot and his wife, Bess of Hardwick. This novel deals with Mary Queen of Scots' early captivity in England whilst under the ';care' of Gilbert Talbot and his wife, Bess of Hardwick.Phillippa Gregory novels are sort of my secret shame - I love her books and pretty much devour them as soon as they come out. However Mary is under imprisonment in Loch Leven Castle after marrying her third husband James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell – the man widely believed to have earlier murdered Mary's second husband Lord Darnley – and she appeals to her cousin Elizabeth for support. I know.

I have not read a book that I didn't enjoy that was written by this very talented author. You have Bess Hardwich who just goes on and on and on about her properties and her candlesticks stolen from monasteries and her account books. HOW??? Le sigh.

""Philippa Gregory is back with another fantastic historical novel....Gregory's books are methodically researched for spot on historical fact along with brilliant story telling. At the same time, I am experiencing mixed feelings about the other main characters in the novel: George and Bess Shrewsbury. It was like walking through mud.I cannot fathom why every reader must compare every book of Gregory's to The Other Boleyn Girl.

This was so long and drawn out, and not at all enjoyable. That doesn't mean every comment should be "This is not like The Other Boleyn Girl" or "This is so much better than The Other Boleyn Girl".
