We were excited to go to enjoy the Open House Fall Feast, held at the beautiful, historic Green Room at the San Francisco War Veterans Memorial (401 Van Ness Ave). In earlier studies, the City classified the steel-framed structure with terra-cotta-clad, concrete infill walls as having significant life hazards in a major earthquake. So we were invited to celebrate together, share a meal & honor our LGBT history and future! We selected shear wall locations to assist with acoustic isolation of the Herbst Theater from the balance of the building. Lovely, lovely Feast! I came to the Green Room in the Veteran's Building for a nonprofit/alumni event. Inside the building, the lobby is built with beautiful cast stone blocks, which Lewis’ company cleaned and repointed. We are volunteers at Open House, an LGBT Senior Housing in the City. Beyond replicating the terra-cotta, there was the challenge of matching the glaze. So the first time I came to the War Memorial Theater I had hair down to my Shoulders and saw Wagner's  De Vliegende Hollander ( and let's just say My Doors of Perception were wide open).....And you know what, they still have the same uncomfortable seats. In 1945, the Veterans Building and Opera House hosted ceremonies surrounding the signing of the United Nations Charter, and together, the two buildings are important contributors to the San Francisco Civic Center National Historic District. The  rooms reminds me of a church basement when you have a huge gathering, wood panel trims and wall-to-wall carpeting,  a small stage or podium and it has a full size kitchen available as well. “The right-side wall in that lobby, roughly a mirror image of the original wall on the left, was still intact, so I had a company come in and laser scan the wall on the right. Yelp users haven’t asked any questions yet about War Memorial Veterans Building. The San Francisco War Memorial Veterans Building and adjacent Opera House are aesthetically-similar, Beaux-Arts structures commemorating U.S. veterans of World War I. We helped the City manage the project, including seismic upgrades, repairs, waterproofing, interior and MEP improvements, and conservation of interior spaces and the building enclosure. A third aspect of the project was repairing the glaze and bisque spalls in the original terra-cotta. Lewis also repaired the glaze and bisque spalls in the original terra cotta. We just saw Roseanne Cash with Ry Cooder and the sound was great. If there is a show you want to see....see it here...just be prepared for the backache. Thank you all to; the catering, service staff, set up crews & outside volunteers - You made everyone happy. “We’re very good at large, masonry façade restoration—be it granite, terra-cotta, brickwork, or GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete)—and we also have considerable experience with waterproofing details and related consulting.”. Lewis replaced all 72 terra-cotta balustrades. The full Thanksgiving meal was turkey w/all the fixings, and a nice helping of pumpkin pie to finish! Inside are many updates & building seems well-maintained. Until this project began in 2013, the building was continually used without substantial modification since opening in 1932. This allows moisture into the clay and permits bio growth to form and with it continued deterioration of the terra-cotta. “If you’re in the lobby, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference by looking at it.”. “A bisque spall is where the actual clay substrate of the terra-cotta is eroded, missing, or cracked,” explains Lewis. Close up of the cracked terra-cotta balustrades. With the laser scanning information we knew exactly how everything was placed.” After hiring a company to replicate the damaged stone, Lewis’ company reproduced the wall on steel framing. Learn more. Howard Bryce Hinson Park off Northeast 160th Street and Northeast 14th Avenue is named after a veteran … “Using hot-water assisted power washing, and we cleaned the entire exterior of the building, producing a dramatic visual change and enhancing a lot of features, like the lions on the ground floor.” After all the meticulous work, Lewis adds “it was really rewarding to see the building sparkle like new again.”. To illustrate how varied the work can be, Lewis points to their recent project at the War Memorial Veterans Building, an immense 1932 Beaux-Arts performing-arts center in San Francisco designed by Arthur Brown Jr. The theater, a cornerstone of San Francisco’s performing arts scene, showcases several hundred … “So one large goal in the project was to recoat the missing glazing—especially much of the frieze at the top of the building where there’s a lot of exposure. “Gladding, McBean supplied much of the historic terra-cotta from California to Chicago during the heyday of terra-cotta construction, and they still have the original drawings for the War Memorial Veterans Building. Small-duct, central air conditioning systems. The contact person is Gary Prater, Veterans' War Memorial Building Administrator in Room 101. Again with another 150 guests ;-) We sat closest to the window. Restaurants. “Nowadays, in terms of color and patterning, the formulas used back in the 1930s are not the same formulas permitted today because there are environmental restrictions on materials, such as pigments and heavy metals, but I think Gladding McBean’s results were a big success.” The value of manufacturing the terra-cotta was approximately $500,000, a large portion of the work. They actually have some pretty great shows here. What a view looking out the floor to ceiling windows. Contact the business for more information about recent service changes. It's really beautiful, it looks like the inside of a palace - it has grand chandeliers, vaulted ceilings, mirrored windows that make the room look endless, and a beautiful balcony for your guests to hang out if the weather is nice. To match the original glaze in color and pattern, Lewis’ company carefully painted on a custom 100 percent acrylic glaze with a suspension of black granular speckles. SGH addressed pervasive water leakage from the metal roof and skylights by designing low-slope roof repairs, a new metal roof, and a new skylight system to match the original appearance with modern waterproofing and energy features.
