The Strange Door

Alain secretly imprisons Edmond in his dungeon for 20 years and convinces Blanche that her father is dead. The movie takes place in 17th century France. Based on the short story, The Sire de Maletroit's Door by Robert Louis Stevenson, it comes with much horror credentials. Alain intends to further debase Blanche as revenge against Edmond. Alain tricks a high-born drunken cad, Denis de Beaulieu (Richard Stapley), in to believing he has murdered a man. This eternally underrated little 'B' features music cues from "The Wolf Man," "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man," and "House of Frankenstein," and was followed a year later by a similar Gothic, "The Black Castle," also featuring Karloff and Pate.Looking for something to watch? Ignoring an ancient prophecy, evil brother Gregor seeks to maintain his feudal power on his his Tyrolean estate by murdering and impersonating his benevolent younger twin.

A scientist becomes murderous after discovering, and being exposed to the radiation of, a powerful new element called Radium X. Noble-born cad Denis (Stapley) has been tricked into a forced stay at the eerie manor of the Sire de Maletroit (Laughton), an evil madman who can't get over the death of his beloved, twenty years after she married his brother (Cavanagh) instead and subsequently passed away during childbirth. Denis escapes a mob by entering the Maletroit chateau by an exterior door which has no latch on the inside.

Story Line: The Strange Story Of A Guy Next Door And A Novelist manga summary: It's a bit unusual, but a man moves in next door to a novelist that's on the rise, and because of that, something about the novelist is changing bit by bit. The movie takes place in 17th century France. Dr. Sovac transplants the brain of a gangster into his professor friend's body to save his life, but there is a side effect that causes a dangerous split personality. Their attempts to escape are foiled by Alain, who then seals Edmond, Blanche and Denis in a stone cell and starts a waterwheel that presses the cell walls inward to crush them to death. However, Denis shows unanticipated redemptive qualities and he and Blanche fall in love. Horror Paul Cavanagh and Alan Napier have smaller roles, but are welcome faces nonetheless. And eventually, this story will reach its end. Was this review helpful to you? The following year's The Black Castle is a bit more luridly entertaining, but both are pretty tepid, if handsomely made. The most interesting thing about The Strange Door is the appearance of John Hoyt, the craggy, lean-faced character actor who would go on to so many guest appearances in '60s TV shows like Twilight Zone, Munsters, and Outer Limits. 7 of 7 people found this review helpful. “The Strange Door” was released in 1951 and was directed by Joseph Pevney. When Voltan comes to kill Denis, Blanche pleads with Voltan to spare his life and help him escape.

Sire Alain de Maletroit (Charles Laughton), plots revenge on his younger brother Edmond (Paul Cavanagh) for stealing Alain's childhood sweetheart, who died giving birth to Edmond's daughter Blanche (Sally Forrest). Hearing the recognizable music, the wonderful b&w cinematography, a howling wind both outside my window and in the movie, plus an eerie cemetery made for quite a movie experience. A young divorcee tries to convert a historic house into a hotel despite its oddball inhabitants and dead bodies in the cellar. Man investigates the disappearance of two of his friends who were the guests of a sinister Austrian count. When Dr. Savaard's experiment in cryonics is interrupted by the short-sighted authorities, his volunteer dies, and he is condemned to death.

Denis and Blanche decide to stay together and Edmond has the strange door removed from the chateau.

It really isn’t a horror movie but more of a melodrama. Karloff is sadly reduced to a tongue-in-cheek servant role, quietly speaking his lines while rolling his eyes with great frequency.
